DC United 1, LA Galaxy 0, David Beckham 45,000

Okay - busted - I bought a 50 ticket on craigslist and walked to RFK to see DC United versus LA Galaxy. Section 314, row 1, seat 11. I looked around the packed stadium as a lady from the DC National Guard sang the National Anthem and two fighter jets above and I shed 1/2 a tear. It was an amazing moment. From the streamers hanging from the camera wires, confetti, flags waving, drums beating, screaming fans (in black and white!). The entire event was so exciting. Signs around the stadium read We sing better than your wife and Where is theBen Olsen Cam? and Posh Spice is my girlfriend. Tonight's game was quite possibly the greatest soccer game I have attended in the United States. Of course, the game really was the same as the rest of the DC United games I have been to except for the fact that David Beckham sold out the stadium! Rumors flew that he wouldn't play... a bad ankle. Well... as the first half began to wind down, Becks began to warm up, and every 15-20 year old girl bagan to scream (and I did too a little). Minutes into the second half, rain puring, fans screaming, a Galaxy red card, Becks subbed in and the stadium went wild.

In the end, he played responsibly and not all that much better than anyone else... but the fans the excitement, the legitimacy that he brought to American football made the evening spectacular.

I plan to post blurry photos soon.
