An Owensboro restaurant has shut down after more than two years in business.

The Blind Parrot at 736 Frederica St. closed Monday evening.

David Schrecker, co-owner of the restaurant with Danny Atherton, said the economy was the reason they decided to close the Blind Parrot.

Schrecker said they hope to sell or lease the building, which was previously a muffler shop and gas station.

The restaurant met with controversy from area residents and Brescia University officials when it opened in 2007.

"I don't like it," Sister Vivian Bowles, then president of Brescia University, told the Messenger-Inquirer in February 2006. "It's a bad situation to have a bar across the street from a school."

Neighbors also discussed their concerns at meetings in 2006 and 2007. Several voiced their concerns at a May 2007 meeting of the Northwest Neighborhood Alliance after the Blind Parrot opened earlier that month. Many were displeased with the shortage of parking on the restaurant property.

Many lived on Eighth Street, a one-way street where Blind Parrot patrons parked. Neighbors said some drivers were speeding down the road or driving down it the wrong way.

Rebekah Hale said during the meeting that she and many of her neighbors wouldn't let their kids play in their front yards anymore because of safety concerns.

BLAH BLAH BLAH>>> We were there a month ago and told people they were going to close and btw I seriously doubt it is the economy. Their phone was cut off, they had very little food on the menu, the distributors had quit sticking beverages in the cooler and the staff was rude. When I asked for a beverage, I was told to go get it myself. See you later, BP. But don't blame the "economy" for your inability to keep a bar open in Owensboro longer than 2 years. It's a weak excuse. That's apropos to the BR saying their success is linked to voodoo......... bwah haha.

Had they given us a couple of weeks, Ben and I could have probably kept them in business.
