D.C. Education Leader Calls For More Parent Involvment

At a discussion on education, the former head of D.C. Public Schools says a key piece of the reform effort is missing-including parents in the decision making process.

As Clifford Janey answered questions, it was clear the more than 100 people in the audience missed him.

“This question here is for Dr Janney. Well, the first part is a statement. Please come back to D.C. as our superintendent. I have a whole stack of those requests,” says one audience member.

Janey says research shows just teachers and administrators affect just 20 percent of what happens to a child.

“And 80 percent is a function of what happens within a family in a community. What is stunning about those in leadership positions in this country and now again in Washington is there is no recognition to that kind of data,” says Janey.

Janey is credited with laying the foundation for gains in math and reading among District students. He was replaced by current Chancellor Michelle Rhee.
