Where are you from?

I get asked this question EVERYDAY! Simple question... Where are you from? America. The United States of! Not so easy an answer. Really, it depends on context.

If I am in Kentucky... the answer Kentucky is not generally acceptable... Hmmmm..... what many people are asking is... why do you look/act different... sometimes I interpret that as to mean "Where is your family from?" Which the answer is still Kentucky!!! But that is not sufficient. "I mean... why are you dark in the winter?"

"Oh. My mom is from El Salvaldor. Is that what you are looking for?"

But i get variations of this question everywhere,... not just KY. That is just an example.

But what truly is the answer to this question???? Where were you born?? Cheverly, Maryland.
Where is your dad from? Kentucky.
Where is your mom from? El Salvador.
Where did you come from? DC!!!
What state are you from? DC is not a state.
WHat?

Clear answers. I'm not from ES. My mom is - but she is American (US Citizen).
I was born in Maryland... but I am not "from" there.
I grew up in Kentucky... I love Kentucky. Am I "from" there?
I hail from DC. Born 2 miles away. Spent 3 years in the District Proper, 10 considering the suburbs (1/3 of my life) Well... but does that make me from there?? Probably not.

So... Kevin Brown. Where are you from?

I'm from the United States of America. The land of the free, and the home of the brave.

Tu est Anglais?
Non! Je ne suis pas Anglais!
Tu est Espagnol?
Non! Je ne suis pas Espagnol! Je suis Americain!!!

I, too, have struggled with this question. I was born in California and would nothing more than to claim that this is where I am 'from'. But I was raised in Kentucky... Now I have lived in Marlyand for 7 years? To me, Kentucky is home and always will be. So when they ask, I tell them. I'm from Kentucky.

thanks for sharing!~ I guess I will do the same. Maybe I should carry a map of the US so I can say "look - here is Kentucky"
