Most of my job here in Togo has become Teacher Training in a variety of environments. At the end of each session, I ask for feedback so that I can make my workshops better in the future. The following comment caught me off guard:
"Differentiation has reached the level of "No Child Left Behind."* In practice it means the bottoming out of education to the lowest common denominator. Students are not challenged to rise but to remain competent at a low level.
*A Bush era program that diverted funds from more essential and vital programs. It encouraged the dumbing down of America - Not surprisingly to the level of the President himself."
Uh. I'm not even sure where to start with what I find offensive about this comment on an evaluation sheet. But please.... I know a few of you out there have thoughts and opinions.

The comment doesn't really make sense to me. NCLB and its supporters make attempts to "standardize" everything from assessment to insrtuction. They tend to theorize about installing identical "best practices" for every student, in every classroom, in every school in the country, whether the school's community be urban, suburban, rural, rich, poor, diverse, homogenous. It seems to me that differentiation is the exact opposite in practice - focus on each learner and how each is best engaged in the educational process. To me it makes no sense to liken one to the other.
